Integrated Communication & Control, Simply Perfect! A Cost-Effective Solution for Remote Networking & Control

I. Practical Demands for Integrated Communication and Control

With the advancement of society and technology, the IT and intelligent industries have developed rapidly. Various network technology devices (such as electrical equipment, automation equipment, communication equipment, data acquisition and control sensors, and instruments) are gradually moving towards IP-based, networked, and intelligent development. More and more IT and intelligent devices now support TCP/IP network connections.
For system integrators in various industries, communication and control belong to different industries and dimensions. Usually, network-related functions are handled by network-specific products, while control-related functions are managed by control-specific products. These products are interconnected through standard TCP/IP interfaces.
For complex systems, independent design and configuration of network communication and control bring many benefits. As the saying goes, “each profession has its own expertise.” Manufacturers focusing on networking and those specializing in automated control can do their best in their respective products or systems. By connecting through a unified TCP/IP interface, the integrity, reliability, and stability of the system can be better ensured.
For relatively simple intelligent systems, such as remote switching of some non-network-managed devices, the configuration of “network + PLC control” will inevitably increase the system cost and complexity. Is it possible to add control interfaces to network communication devices to meet the demand for integrated communication and control?

II. Upgrade of the iMAX-4GW300 Dual-Mode Gateway

The iMAX-4GW300 series dual-mode gateway products support both iMAX wireless metropolitan area network (WMAN) technology and 4G LTE (FDD-LTE & TDD-LTE). They also provide 3 Ethernet interfaces and multiple VPN access methods, enabling them to be used as multi-network convergence gateways.
While leveraging wireless private network technology to achieve high bandwidth, high reliability, and high capacity, the product also supports 4G LTE network access of telecom operators’ public networks. This enhances the applicability of the system’s wireless networking and provides users with more flexible and optimal wireless networking solutions.

Previously, this product only supported networking functions, enabling network interconnection via 4G LTE or iMAX Wireless Metropolitan Area Network (WMAN) private network—especially for building secure remote and off-site VPN (Virtual Private Network). To meet users’ needs for integrated communication and control in specific application scenarios, we have upgraded the product.

Specific Upgrade Details

Without changing the original architecture of the iMAX-4GW300, GPIO interfaces have been added. Currently, it provides 2 digital GPIO interfaces that can perform operations such as power-on/off and restart of connected external devices. With programming support, more actions can be implemented, such as sending alarm notifications to the management platform.

About GPIO

GPIO (General-purpose input/output) refers to general-purpose input/output ports, a fundamental component of embedded devices. They enable embedded systems to interact with the external environment and can be configured as input or output modes.
  • In input mode, GPIO can read signals from external devices like sensors and switches.
  • In output mode, it can control external devices such as LED lights and motors.
GPIO acts as a communication bridge between hardware and software. Through programming, they can be flexibly controlled to perform various operations.

About GPIO Control

GPIO control involves reading and setting the level status of these GPIO pins via software to achieve control and data exchange with external devices. The iMAX-4GW300 currently offers 2 GPIO interfaces and supports further programming linkage. Technicians from Guoxin Longxin can customize and develop corresponding linkage functions for users.
It should be noted that relying solely on the GPIO interface of the iMAX-4GW300 to send control commands is insufficient. Operations like power-on/off and restart of external devices require the collaboration of external relays. The specific type of relay to use depends on user requirements—for details, consult the Technical Department of Guoxin Longxin, which will not be elaborated on in this document.

III. Typical Application Scenarios of Remote Control Function

The main application scenarios of the dual-mode gateway iMAX-4GW300 include mobile communication scenarios such as vehicle networking and ship networking, as well as numerous remote networking scenarios like remote off-site data acquisition, equipment management, and billing monitoring. Most of these scenarios are deployed using Guoxin Longxin’s SD-CX, an internet solution based on cloud platforms.
Guoxin Longxin’s SD-CX internet solution based on cloud platforms can be deployed on private clouds, public clouds (e.g., Tencent Cloud), or hybrid clouds. Network interconnection based on cloud systems is called Cloud Interconnection SD-CX (SDN based Cloud Exchange). Specifically, Guoxin Longxin’s SD-CX solution realizes customized integration and cloud interconnection of “Wide Area Network (WAN) + Wireless Metropolitan Area Network (WMAN) + Local Area Network (LAN) + VPN technology”, among which VPN technology and cloud interconnection are the core technologies for ensuring the solution’s security and stable operation.
The iMAX-4GW300 is an innovative product. It innovatively integrates iMAX WMAN and 4G LTE wireless technologies, and can be used as a comprehensive switching gateway platform supporting multiple access methods. These methods include fiber access (requiring configuration of Guoxin Longxin’s FiberDC-IDU), LAN interconnection, MPLS dedicated line access, Internet broadband access, iMAX WMAN private network access, and 4G Internet access.
After adding 2 GPIO interfaces, the iMAX-4GW300 has gained the function of switching and managing external devices (especially non-network devices), further expanding the device’s application scenarios and enhancing its value.
VPN (Virtual Private Network) technology establishes a “private network” on a “public network” (or an encrypted private network on a private network to improve security) for encrypted communication. VPN technology mainly relies on tunnel encryption protocols, with typical ones including PPTP, L2TP, and IPSec. Guoxin Longxin’s solution is built in the mode of “VPN server + VPN gateway”, which mainly uses embedded hardware VPN devices. This undoubtedly ensures better reliability and security for remote management and maintenance.
This solution is an internet solution based on cloud platforms. Users can choose private clouds, public clouds, or hybrid clouds, and form a private network for distributed charging pile networks on the WAN through VPN tunnel encryption technology. Moreover, as Guoxin Longxin’s solution is built in the mode of “VPN server + VPN gateway” centered on hardware VPN devices, it undoubtedly offers better reliability and security.
Taking the networking solution for the remote off-site network management and operation and maintenance system of equipment as an example, its network topology diagram is as follows:
The Guoxin Longxin Cloud Interconnection SD-CX Solution addresses device networking needs. Specific devices include but are not limited to servers, switches, IP cameras, PLCs, sensors, IP broadcasting devices, large advertising screens, wireless communication devices, and optical communication devices. To a certain extent, this solution can enable remote networking for any device managed based on TCP/IP networks.
Through this GPIO interface upgrade of the product, we have significantly expanded the application scenarios and functions of the iMAX-4GW300 dual-mode wireless gateway. It helps users reduce investment costs while enhancing system reliability and convenience. Applicable deployment scenarios include but are not limited to the following:

1.Remote start/stop of non-network devices: Previously, this product only supported the management and maintenance of network devices (e.g., industrial computers, WiFi APs, PLCs). Now, it can also perform operations such as shutdown and restart on external non-network devices, such as street lights without network ports, high-mast lights, landscape lights, electric doors/windows, large advertising screens, and electric gates.

For example: Some devices need to be shut down at midnight to save energy. Previously, on-site personnel were required to perform this operation, but now it can be achieved simply by sending a shutdown command to the iMAX-4GW300.
Another example: Handling of abnormal situations. If it gets dark during the day due to cloudy or rainy weather and auxiliary lighting is needed, the lights can be turned on remotely just by sending a power-on command.

2.Remote control for rental systems: Many rental devices, such as vehicles, construction machinery, and tower cranes, are owned by operating rental companies. However, once these devices are rented out, collecting rent becomes a challenge. Through the iMAX-4GW300, remote off-site networking can be achieved, allowing real-time shutdown of devices for which rent has not been paid to prompt payment. After the user renews the rent, the device can be turned on remotely in real time without the need for on-site personnel. This not only reduces human resource costs but also improves management efficiency.

3.Remote Control for Timing/Billing Systems:In numerous timing or billing scenarios—such as smart charging piles, smart parking billing systems, water resource billing and dispatching (gate/solenoid valve, etc.) control systems, and distributed photovoltaic power generation systems—the iMAX-4GW300 can be used to achieve remote off-site networking. Real-time timing or billing can be implemented via the network, and the system can be directly shut down or activated remotely.

4.Emergency Safety Devices for Certain Systems:In many high-safety systems, there are emergency braking and shutdown devices, but most of them can only be triggered on-site. However, in on-site environments with risks—such as amusement parks where special equipment operation certificates have expired, dangerous goods storage warehouses, and the tops of iron towers requiring high-altitude operations—it is inconvenient or high-risk for personnel to enter. The iMAX-4GW300 can be used to achieve remote off-site networking, or to build a private network in combination with the iMAX wireless metropolitan area network system, thereby realizing remote emergency shutdown of the system.

5.Light Shows/Fountain Shows, etc.:By using the iMAX-4GW300 to control two or even multiple groups of lights (fountains) simultaneously, functions like group-based on/off and scheduled on/off for lights (fountains) can be achieved—thus enabling light show (fountain show) capabilities. This is highly practical in scenarios such as scenic spots and squares.

In conclusion, after the addition of digital GPIO interfaces, the iMAX-4GW300 has become more powerful. It helps users save investment in expensive electrical control equipment such as PLCs and intelligent IOs, thus expanding its application scenarios.
It needs to be emphasized that compared with ordinary civilian-grade 4G routers, the iMAX-4GW300 not only features more reliable and stable product quality, supporting industrial-grade wide-temperature specifications and VPN secure network construction, but also balances network security, stability, and cost-effectiveness. It meets the availability, practicality, and sustainability requirements of internet-based business operations. Now, with the expanded ability to control external devices, it offers even higher applicability and cost-effectiveness.
For users with specific needs, Guoxin Longxin can customize the most suitable networking solutions to meet their personalized requirements.
